Notes to Mrs. Marshall McDonald [manuscript] ca.[1860-1861].

Three notes by Mrs. Robert E. Lee; in one she writes concerning materials for two bonnets, curtains and a handkerchief; mentions Mrs. Corbin and Mary. In another note Mrs. Lee comments on Mrs. McDonald's health and states she should not "part with Bettie until you are ready to leave as it is such a trial to part with a nurse." Mrs. Lee would like to take Emma to "the Springs" but would be just as glad to take Mrs, McDonald's Bettie ad can "appreciate perhaps more than most persons on account of my helpless state any faithful services." In the third note, Mrs. Lee states that Emma does not want to go to "the Springs"; if Mrs. McDonald "can spare Bettie" Mrs. Lee will be glad to take her. A letter to "Nellie", 29 Dec. 1860, from Emily [Virginia Mason?], Petersburg, mentions sends greetings and mentions that "from Christmas to New Year is the darkey's holiday. They leave all work and care behind them for the time, and the white people have to look out for themselves." She asks if "people think that the national affairs can be adjusted in such a manner as to preserve the peace and harmony of the Union?" South Carolina has "foolishly withdrawn" but [Mason] hopes "she may be brought back again. She states that "Virginia intends to remain in the Union so long as she can with honor." She mentions Stratford. [Mason] asks about Nellie's teaching position and concludes by asking her to send a daguerreotype. The collection also includes an autograph album, 1860, 1861, of M. Lizzie Sherman, of Jefferson County, Va.
